Italy fittingly fastest in free practice

By Andrew van de Burgt, Saturday 4th October 2008

Fittingly Team Italy topped the first-ever free practice session with the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari cars.

It was a difficult session, interrupted by two red flags, a brief but heavy cloud burst, and foxes on the track.

As the asphalt dried late on, Italian newcomer Fabio Onidi posted his best lap to send Piercarlo Ghinzani's squad to the top of the times. Local heroes Team Netherlands and Jereon Bleekemolen had been quick throughout, but were demoted to second, while Adam Carroll - who was spectacular when the track was at its wettest - took third for Team Ireland.

Dutch team fastest in final practice

By Andrew van de Burgt, Saturday 4th October 2008

Team Netherlands gave the wind-battered home fans something to cheer by topping the second A1GP practice session at Zandvoort.

Track specialist Jeroen Bleekemolen was a comfortable 0.6sec clear of defending champions Team Switzerland and Neel Jani.

The rain held off for the one-hour session, but the track was still damp in places, and there were numerous spinners - and two red flags. Team Italy's Fabio Onidi ended his session in the gravel, but there were fortunately no damaged cars given the near-total lack of spares............

Netherlands on pole at Zandvoort

By Andrew van de Burgt, Saturday 4th October 2008

Jeroen Bleekemolen earned Team Netherlands pole position for the A1GP season four opener at their home track, Zandvoort.

Bleekemolen fought hard with Team Ireland's Adam Carroll for the coveted first 'Powered by Ferrari' era pole, and a great effort of 1:24.213 with about ten minutes of the one-hour session to go, settled the matter in the orange car’s favour.

That time is over four seconds faster than the best lap recorded at Zandvoort in the old Lola-Zytek.

Carroll was bumped from the front row in the dying minutes by a great effort from Team New Zealand’s new driver Earl Bamber. Fairuz Fauzy set the first flying lap for Team Malaysia and eventually wound up fourth, while Team Monaco had an impressive debut with Clivio Piccione fifth.

France and Portugal finally hit the track, but.........

They have introduced dropping points so those that are not entering will count Zandvoort as one of their dropped scores.

Malaysia win Zandvoort sprint race

By Andrew van de Burgt, Sunday 5th October 2008

Team Malaysia claimed the first A1GP victory of the Powered by Ferrari era in utterly appalling conditions at Zandvoort this morning.

Constant rain and gale-force winds meant the race started under the safety car, but before the action even officially got underway there was drama as Adam Carroll spun going through the final turn and was collected by Team Monaco's Clivio Piccione.

At the front, Jeroen Bleekemolen led, but had Earl Bamber's Black Beauty in his mirrors. The teenage Kiwi eventually forced a mistake from the Dutchman and took over the lead.

Meanwhile, Fauzy was swapping third place with Team Switzerland's Neel Jani. He finally shook off the........
