Power tops rookie orientation day

By Robin Miller, Monday 5th May 2008

It's the largest rookie crop since 1997 but there's as much quality as their is quantity in Gasoline Alley and it showed Sunday afternoon during rookie orientation.

A dozen drivers, let's label them first-timers instead of rookies, completed 642 error-free laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on an opening day that saw 10 of them breeze through their four-phase driving test.

The daunting oval that's shaped the landscape of American motorsports for nearly 100 years offered no surprises or horror stories on a mild, sunny day.

"Surprisingly, I wasn't nervous at all," said 19-year-old Graham Rahal after taking only 34 laps to complete his test with a top lap of 218 mph. "I think if you get yourself all worked up about it, you get really nervous and then you makes mistakes.........

Camara crashes on rookie day two

By Robin Miller, Tuesday 6th May 2008

Rookie Jaime Camara quickly got up to speed Monday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before quickly getting into trouble and becoming the first casualty of the month.

After running 218 mph on his fourth lap, Camara got low in Turn 1, lost control and slammed into the safety barrier backwards. He walked to the ambulance, complained of back pains and went to Methodist Hospital but was back in Gasoline Alley by late afternoon.

"I went into Turn 1 and turned in a little early and got below the white line. That wasn't such a good idea," said Camara, a former Indy Pro Series winner who sat out 2007.

"That's why I lost it and crashed. It was totally my fault."

.......besides the first wall contact of the month, the other big story was Alex Lloyd.

Last year's IPS champion, who signed with Chip Ganassi but has been farmed out to the Rahal/Letterman stable for May, continued to impress and turned the fastest lap of the day at 223.033 mph........

The veterans finally get on the track Tuesday for their first five hour practice period of the month.

Bernoldi became the 11th rookie to pass his test, while Mario Dominguez and Mario Moraes got through three of the four phases. They now must wait until the second week to continue.

What tests/phases do the rookies have to pass to race at Indy...?

INDIANAPOLIS 500 QUALIFYING PROCEDURES:
Qualifications are also known as Time Trials. This means the drivers compete to see who is the fastest and gets to start the race close to the front.

The qualifying draw for positions is conducted in first-come, first-serve order the day before 1st Day of Qualifying, ie. the drivers draw to see who is going to get to qualify first, second, third, etc. Drivers generally will be trying to qualify both their primary car and a backup (T) car.

The pole position is decided by the fastest qualifier on the first day, or the fastest qualifier after one trip through the original qualifying line, whichever comes LAST.

Each car can make three qualification attempts. When a car completes a four-lap, 10-mile qualification attempt, its speed becomes official. The car may not re-qualify. The driver, if the car is bumped or withdrawn, may qualify in another car.

Each car must take two warm-up laps. The decision to take the green to start the attempt or wave off must be made the second time past the flagstand.

The team owner or designated representative must raise the green flag to signify the start of a qualification attempt or the yellow flag will be thrown, aborting the attempt.

Qualifying Schedule:

Qualifying is ran the two weekends before race weekend.

The first day of qualifying is a Saturday. It is known as "Pole Day". Positions one through 11 in the 33-car field are available to the fastest 11 qualifiers that day. Once the 11 spots are full, bumping will occur for the rest of the day to determine the Pole and the fastest 11 qualifiers for that day.

Second Day Qualifying, Sunday: Positions 12 through 22 are available. Once those spots are full, bumping will occur only in spots 12 through 22 for the rest of the day to determine the fastest 11 qualifiers for that day.

Third Day Qualifying, Saturday: Positions 23 through 33 are available. Once those spots are full, bumping will occur only in spots 23-33 for the rest of the day to determine the fastest 11 qualifiers for that day.

Fourth Day Qualifying, Sunday: The last day of qualifying is known as "Bump Day" and "Bubble Day". Any qualifying attempt on this day that is faster than a qualified entrant in the 33 positions in the starting field will bump the slowest qualifier from the field, regardless of the day of qualification. The “bumped” entrant will be removed from the field of 33, and the remaining field will move ahead one position in the starting field as the newly qualified entrant will take the 33rd position, or a higher position if faster than the other fourth-day qualifiers. As the end of the day approaches (6 p.m.) the driver sitting in last place of the grid gets mighty nervous.

Each car, primary or backup, will have three attempts per day to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. If a car is bumped on any day of qualifications, that entrant can re-enter the qualification line and attempt to re-qualify based on the numbers of attempts remaining for that car.

Entrants also can still withdraw qualified cars from the field at their choice, but that car still will be allowed to make qualifying attempts based on the number of attempts it has remaining for the day. The car does not have to be removed from competition, as in previous formats.

Andretti flies in opening practice

By Jeff Olson, Tuesday 6th May 2008

With an assist from Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti fired the opening salvo in the week of speed leading up to pole qualifying for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.

Andretti had the fastest lap during the first day of full practice Tuesday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, clocking 226.599 mph in the No. 26 Andretti Green Racing Honda/Dallara. That was a few tenths better than teammate Tony Kanaan.

The credit for Andretti's effort went to another youngster, 19-year-old rookie Graham Rahal, whose car Andretti followed through the lap that turned out to be fastest.

"We had a really big tow, but you need the mechanical balance in order to get that speed," said Andretti, who turned 21 in March. "I'm really pleased with our guys so far. It's a good start, but this place changes."

Kanaan was clocked at 225.269 mph in the No. 11 AGR Honda/Dallara, followed by Scott Dixon, who did 225.011 in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda/Dallara. Team Penske newcomer Ryan Briscoe was fourth-fastest, followed by Dan Wheldon, Helio Castroneves and Tomas Scheckter................

Practice resumes Wednesday at noon ET. Qualifying for the first 11 positions in the 33-car field is scheduled for Saturday.

Wednesday practice rained off at Indy

By Jeff Olson Wednesday 7th May 2008

The weather conditions at Indianapolis could be a serious concern for this weekend's Indy 500 qualifying after today's practice session was rained off.

More rain is expected on Thursday and Friday, meaning drivers and teams might have had very little running when pole qualifying begins on Saturday. Even more rain is forecast for Sunday, throwing the possibility of more delays into the mix.

Dixon tops Friday practice at Indy

By Jeff Olson, Friday 9th May 2008

The rain has had its say on the preparation for pole qualifying for the 92nd Indianapolis 500. Now it's time for the drivers and machines to have their say.

Working on as little as 12 hours of practice after Friday's session was washed out halfway through, top teams will take their shot at the first 11 positions for the May 25 when qualifying begins Saturday at noon ET.

...."You're going to know early on whether you're in the range to go for the pole," Dixon said. "There's no point in throwing the thing into the wall trying to get pole. I don't think it makes much difference if you're on the first row or the fourth row."

Dixon's best lap Friday - 226.968 mph - in the No. 9 Ganassi Honda/Dallara was just slightly better than Andretti, Kanaan and Ryan Briscoe, who has been fast throughout the week in the No. 6 Penske Honda/Dallara.

Others showing speed during Friday's three hours of track time included Dan Wheldon, Vitor Meira, Danica Patrick, Tomas Scheckter and Castroneves.

"We're in good shape for tomorrow," Castroneves said. "I'm not concerned.............

Dixon beats Wheldon to Indy pole

By Matt Beer and Jeff Olson, Saturday 10th May 2008

Scott Dixon survived a late challenge from Ganassi teammate Dan Wheldon to claim pole position for this year's Indianapolis 500.

Wheldon had held provisional pole for much of the early afternoon, before being beaten by Dixon and Penske's Ryan Briscoe with just over two hours to go.

Dixon had withdrawn his record-setting first run to regain the pole position, then withstood the challenge from Wheldon, who himself withdrew a front row spot as the final minutes ticked away. In the end, Dixon unflappably handled the drama to win the pole for the 92nd running of the Indy 500.

"I was really worried about my teammate," Dixon said. "We knew how hard they had been working all afternoon............

Rain cancels second day qualifying

By Matt Beer and Jeff Olson, Sunday 11th May 2008

The second day of qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 has been cancelled due to rain at the Speedway.

The weather has disrupted proceedings all week at Indy, with two days of practice already lost to wet conditions.

Morning showers forced the pre-qualifying practice hour to be cancelled earlier today, and with the weather looking unlikely to improve, IMS officials announced shortly after the scheduled start of qualifying that the day's planned six-hour session will not take place.

Positions 12 to 22 on the Indy 500 grid had been due to be set today, but these will now be allocated at the same time as the final 11 places in next Saturday's session............

Practice will resume next Wednesday.

Ganassi top rain-shortened practice

By Jeff Olson, Thursday 15th May 2008

The guys who were fastest Saturday continued to be the fastest Wednesday as preparation resumed for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon had the fastest laps during an abbreviated and hurried practice session Wednesday that lasted about 51 minutes at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Dixon recorded a lap of 222.834 mph in the No. 9 Ganassi Honda/Dallara, while Wheldon was clocked at 222.810 mph in the No. 10 car.

"We just wanted to see how the car handled in traffic," said Dixon, who completed just 17 laps. "Everybody was out there, so we got to run in traffic a little bit and see how the balance was. We have a little bit of understeer, especially in traffic."

Wednesday's session, the first track activity since pole qualifying Saturday, was delayed and shortened because of rain. It didn't begin until 5 pm ET, then was cut short at 5:51 pm when the rain resumed.

The bulk of the 390 laps recorded Wednesday occurred after 5:30, and just two drivers - Hideki Mutoh and Will Power - topped 25 laps.

"Assuming it will rain again tomorrow, it was good that we got some track time today," Mutoh said. "We were ....

Practice is scheduled to resume Thursday at noon ET, but a 70 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

Briscoe heads busy Thursday practice

By Jeff Olson, Friday 16th May 2008

A break in the weather Thursday led to a busy day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Ryan Briscoe led the way as drivers and teams took advantage of the first full practice session in more than a week, recording in one day nearly two-thirds of the laps they had previously recorded this month.

Briscoe was clocked at 223.708 mph in the No. 6 Team Penske Honda/Dallara, a shade faster than his teammate Helio Castroneves. It was the first time in a week that someone other than the Target Chip Ganassi drivers had been atop the speed charts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It also marked the first time that the 11 drivers already in the field were able to run for extended periods alongside the drivers who haven't qualified.

...Thirty-five cars were on the track Thursday, recording 2,628 laps during the six-hour session. That's 61 percent of the total laps turned between May 4 and Wednesday.

........Practice resumes Friday at noon ET, the final day before Saturday's busy qualifying session, in which the remaining 22 positions on the starting grid will be filled. Only the first 11 positions have been filled so far.

Dixon fastest in Friday practice

By Jeff Olson Friday 16th May 2008

Scott Dixon was fastest again in Friday practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as he backed up his pole position with an effort of 223.714 mph on the final day of preparation before Saturday's all-important second round of qualifying for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.

The Ganassi driver recorded a comparatively light workload of 60 laps as the 11 drivers who secured their grid spots in last week's Pole Day session worked on longer full-tank runs, while those not yet in the race focused on a combination of race and qualifying simulations.

Penske teammates Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe completed the top three, both using their back-up cars, despite Briscoe being one of three drivers to crash during the day. The Australian was unhurt when he spun into the wall on the exit of Turn 1 while running behind Marco Andretti just after 4pm local time.

"I think the tyres were getting old, and I lost the rear going down into Turn 1," said Briscoe, who has already qualified on the outside of the front row.

"I was a bit surprised because I wasn't at full speed. I was just coming up to speed. I must have caught some dirty air from Marco's car in front of me and just lost the rear."

Will Power (KV Racing) and EJ Viso (HVM) also escaped injury in their earlier accidents, although as the ex-Champ Car duo did not make it into the field last Saturday, their crashes could have serious effects on whether they qualify for the race tomorrow...........

J Andretti fastest in morning practice

Bell fastest on second qualifying day

By Matt Beer and Jeff Olson, Saturday 17th May 2008

Townsend Bell was fastest on the second qualifying day for the 2008 Indianapolis 500, earning himself 12th place on the starting grid, while AJ Foyt IV, Max Papis, Mario Dominguez and Phil Giebler all failed to make the field after various dramas.

Bell set his 222.539mph average on his first and only attempt of the afternoon, and it remained unbeaten for the rest of the day.

"I'm pretty happy with the way it went," Bell said. "We had good qualifying practice today and last night, and we knew we'd be pretty close.

The Dreyer & Reinbold driver beat Graham Rahal to the quickest time today, with Darren Manning (Foyt) third-quickest, giving him 14th on the grid..............
