Foyt IV completes the Indy 500 grid

By Matt Beer and Jeff Olson, Sunday 18th May 2008

AJ Foyt IV made it into the Indianapolis 500 field on Bump Day and then escaped a dramatic accident on a practice run, while Mario Dominguez, Roger Yasukawa and Max Papis missed out on the last grid spots in a thrilling final half-hour of qualifying.

Having failed to make it into the field yesterday after an error on his first run and a gearbox failure on his second, Foyt IV wasted no time in booking his place on the grid today, immediately producing a four-lap average of 219.184mph.

That proved to be easily sufficient to guarantee Foyt's place in the race - which was fortunate for the Vision Racing driver as two hours later he suffered a massive accident while on a practice lap. A missing component in the fuel system caused Foyt's Dallara-Honda to burst into flames at the rear and then spin into the Turn 2 wall, but he emerged with only minor burns.

"It's been a tough month so far," Foyt admitted, "but that's the way Indy is.".............

Rain limits final Indy 500 practice

By Jeff Olson Saturday 24th May 2008

The final practice session for Sunday's Indianapolis 500 was limited to 12 minutes of running on Friday because of rain, but the drivers at the front of the field played down the loss of track time.

They said the Carb Day session is usually little more than a leak check and the handful of laps they got in before the rain was enough.

"My theory is that if you don't know it by Carb Day, you're never going to have it," said Dan Wheldon, who will start second on Sunday and was fastest during Friday's shortened session.

"You can certainly fine-tune it in the race with all of the pit stops you have. The balance seemed nice today. Let's just hope it's like that Sunday."

The fastest of Wheldon's six laps in the No.10 Chip Ganassi Racing car was 223.934mph, 0.26 seconds better than team-mate and pole winner Scott Dixon, who had the second-best lap.

.......The rest of Friday's activities were washed out. The pit-stop competition was cancelled, and the Freedom 100 Indy Lights race was postponed until Saturday.

Weather forecasts for Saturday and Sunday appear positive, with mild temperatures and sunny skies.

RAIN LIMITS FINAL INDY PRACTICE

Yes it did! We got drenched! Still, got Dan Weldon to sign hats and had photo taken with him!

Saw the Indy lights race today - great fun!

Had a wonder around pits, could not get closer than to touch the cars!

Both a bit pink.....

EJ brushed the wall at least once so far lol

Danica's just crashed in the pit with Ryan briscoe, she's out. I was gonna make a joke about women drivers but it was Ryans fault. She looked fair moody going down the pitlane...

Things are getting manic now, theres going to be trouble before its over. Dixon, Meira, C-N and Andretti pulling away from the restart.
