Castroneves wins at Infineon

Postby CrazyChick » Mon 25 Aug, 2008 12:22 pm

By Jeff Olson, Monday 25th August 2008

Helio Castroneves put the finishing touches on a week of resurrection for Team Penske by winning the Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma County on Sunday at Infineon Raceway and putting himself back into contention for the IndyCar Series championship.

Then, without a proper fence for his signature post-victory celebratory move, Castroneves climbed the main grandstand and dived into a group of fans.

On Wednesday, the mood wasn't so joyful at Team Penske headquarters in Mooresville, North Carolina. The team's transporter carrying both primary road-racing cars had caught fire in Wyoming.

"It was a great and special week for us," Castroneves said. "It's just a reward. It's like all the unexpected hard work paid off. This just proves that the guys keep these cars in fantastic shape. As drivers, we didn't know the difference between the cars."............

Penske commanded this race from the start despite different strategies from various teams.

Newman/Haas/Lanigan need to work on strategy more I think, Wilson had to work very hard for that 9th place.

106 points up for grabs with 2 races to go so its now between Dixon and Castroneves only.

Great to see Katherine Legge in the sky sports studio looking very nice!

I saw it on the web as I don't have sky (no adverts though) and it was processional. People like Viso and Bernoldi causing Trulli Trains at different times due to different strategies and people not being able to pass.

The strategy side of it was interesting though as there were three different strategies adopted and it wasn't obvious which would turn out to be the best (a driver using each finished in the top 4). The race was marginal as to whether or not it can be done on 2 or 3 stops. Some drivers (including Wheldon) decided to pit after 7 or 8 laps (the point at which it could be done on just two more stops without the need for economy runs) in the hope they could gain the time back under safety cars. Others, including Castroneves pitted under the only safety car period on lap 17. The third strategy, used by Briscoe and Kanaan amongst others was to do fuel economy runs, stretching stints to the 25-30 laps enabling the race to be done with only two stops.

I started watching it, but it looked very processional, so i turned off my pc (streaming too) as i had work early.

I bet Helium is glad he is now in the 'testing car', as it seemed to have brought him the luck, that his now cremated 'race car' couldn't provide...
