Power tops first practice at Surfers

By Matt Beer, Thursday 23rd October 2008

Will Power made a perfect start to his home race weekend by beating Justin Wilson to the fastest time in Friday morning practice at Surfers Paradise.

KV Racing driver Power - twice a pole-sitter but never yet a winner at the track - set a 1:36.3391 lap right at the end of the 90-minute session to out-pace Wilson (Newman/Haas/Lanigan) by 0.2216 seconds.

The top two had swapped places several times in the final half-hour, and were half a second clear of the rest of the field, which was led by the Ganassi duo.

Dario Franchitti began his IndyCar Series comeback in fine style as he took third place, 0.0148 seconds quicker than his teammate, and successor as champion, Scott Dixon...........

Power dominates Surfers practice

By Matt Beer, Friday 24th October 24th 2008

Home favourite Will Power left the rest of the field trailing in his wake in second practice at Surfers Paradise, as he topped the session by 1.3 seconds.

The KV Racing driver moved to the front halfway through the session, usurping early pace-setters Graham Rahal (Newman/Haas/Lanigan) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Rahal Letterman) and then casually extended his advantage, eventually setting a 1:34.8084.

That performance will boost Power's hopes of taking a third consecutive pole position at Surfers, following on from his poles in the final two Champ Car events at the track. But despite his speed on the Australian street circuit, Power has always suffered poor luck on race day and is still hunting for his first home win after collisions in all three of his Surfers races to date.

Helio Castroneves improved on his morning performance to take second for Penske, albeit still a long way behind Power's pace.

Dario Franchitti maintained his............

Kanaan angry about disallowed lap

Tony Kanaan claims the Indy Racing League officials denied him a top six qualifying position at Surfers Paradise.

The Andretti Green Racing was eliminated in the second part of qualifying and will start eighth. However Kanaan recorded the third fastest time in the top 12 session, so expected to progress to the Fast Six shoot-out for pole.

The officials ruled that Kanaan's lap had been set after the chequered flag, but the Brazilian disputed this - arguing that Dario Franchitti was credited with a lap at the same time.

"The Team 7-Eleven car should have been in the Firestone Fast Six but the league said I crossed the finish line and took the chequered flag, so my last lap didn't count," said Kanaan.

"It is completely unfair because I was right behind Dario and they gave him the lap so I don't know what to say. We'll take eighth but we're not happy about it."

Kanaan's frustrations continued Andretti Green's difficult weekend, with his teammates Marco Andretti, Hideki Mutoh and Danica Patrick starting back in 14th, 16th and 23rd respectively.

Patrick failed to set a qualifying time after crashing on slicks at the start of the damp first segment.

"As soon as we went out the rain came and I spun out on the first lap," she said. "I was hoping that I would be able to come in and get rain tyres and get back out, but my car stalled so we lost quite a bit of time. Long story short, I was unable to get a full lap completed so I'm starting 23rd."
