Will Power: 2014 Indycar Champion and other Indycar news

Postby NewMrMe » Sun 31 Aug, 2014 11:09 am

After previously losing last race title deciders in 2010, 2011 and 2012 Will Power has finally taken the title.

Power lead the points going into the final race, the California 500 at Fontana, with Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud still capable of overhauling him. All three contenders had poor results though with Power 9th, Castroneves 14th and Paganaud 20th. Tony Kanaan won the race, which bizarrely for a 500 mile race only had a single retirement.

- Houston will be dropped. Organisers wanted an autumn date, which with Indycar's new policy of finishing before the NFL season starts cannot happen.
- The calendar is rumoured to be expanding by having a couple of races in February next year, which could involve international expansion. A street race in Dubai and a return to Brazil have been rumoured.
- Toronto is a stumbling block for the 2015 calendar. The city is hosting the Pan American games next year which clashes with its traditional mid July slot. One option is to rejig the calendar. Not easy though as several races have their dates written into their contracts. The other is to find an alternative venue for next year with Toronto returning in 2016. As Toronto is the only current Canadian race, Indycar has confirmed that any alternative venue would also be in Canada. Former Canadian Grand Prix host circuit Mosport Park has been rumoured as a possible replacement,
