This season they opened up the bodywork to be developed by car manufacturers in addition to engines. The three that got airborne were all using Chevrolet bodyworks so it is possible there was an issue there.

Hinchcliffe's crash sounds quite nasty. Apparently some suspension parts entered the cockpit and impailed his legs. Apparently at one point his condition was critical due to blood loss. Fortunately he is now out of intensive care and is expected to make a full recovery.
