Windows 7 Taskbar Flicker.

Postby Daniel » Thu 17 Dec, 2009 8:29 pm

I am having a bit of a niggling issue with Windows 7. Every now and then (regulalrly, but intermittently) My Taskbar and sometimes the title bar of my window will sort of flicker, going partially transparent in places. It will do this constantly until I stop it, which I simply do by clicking on an empty part of it a couple of times and then it comes back.

This problem doesn't effect the running of my laptop or any of it's programs at all, it's just an annoyance and something I would like to fix.

I've done a search of google and checked several sites. It seems I'm not alone on this, but I've yet to find an answer that has fixed it for me.

Some have suggested switching to the Basic theme which disables all the 'aero' features. This to me doesn't really solve the problem and just hides it... besides, if I wanted to use the basic theme I would be.

Another suggested solution that looked promising was to update the driver for my display adapter. However my devices manager tells me that my drivers are up to date. So no luck there.

My Display adapter is a Mobile Intel 45 Express (GMA 4500M?)I think... and the driver version I'm running is 8.15.10.1749. This information may be of no use whatsoever, but thought I'd include it just in case.

Does anyone have any idea?

I must admit it does sound driver related and even though the device manager says its up to date (it normally does say that no matter what) I would try to find a newer release. At a quick check I found these drivers for your card:
http://www.techeta.com/2009/08/intel-gm ... ivers.html
or:
Ati driver:
http://drivers-download-center.org/tag/intel-gma-4500m

Download and try, you can always 'Roll Back Driver' in the device manager if you need to.

You can also go to the manufactures website of you Lapdog, go to support and see if there are any driver updates there, also check the manufactures forums to see if anyone else has had the same issues and any solutions.

Depending on how old your lapdog is, you may even find that your Bios needs updating too to handle Windows 7 better!

Agreed, it seems to be a driver issue Dan.

I've just updated from 64 bit Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate and I've got no issues at all. It's quite a lot quicker, although I assume that some of the improvement might be down to a rewritten registry, so that the previous bloated one has been dumped.

No doubt a quad core Intel, 8 Gb of memory and ReadyBoost help but I must say it's easy to use and overall rather nice.

Yes I just built another PC too, overclocked to 4ghz and using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, instantly fast, just how it should be and really impressed with the OS, runs like a dream!
