It looks petite compared with a 360 or 430. I haven't seen a 458 so can't comment on that.

They have a chassis on display too, and from an engineering POV, it looks simple and elegant.

The car was styled by a team led by Frank Stevenson, who was also responsible for the Fiat 500.

The way I see it is that jurnos are just people, and people herd. that is to say they often don't say what they think, but they say what they think they should say.

It's the same with Apple. Take an iPod, its just a box, pretty though it is, there are other pretty boxes. there are other MP3 players and arguably cheaper, more reliable and better sound quality, but an Apple iPod is supposed to be cool right?

Ferrari's are supposed to be sexy, Lambos a bit mad.... and McLaren? Well everyone expects them to be clinical and bland... so thats what they think they should say or they may risk looking "uneducated"

The "expletive" end on the MP4-12C is so damn sexy it practically gives me a semi just to look at it.

Beyond the Italians, it looks generic. It looks like it could be from any European car manufacturer. But even amongst the Italians the Ferraris's and Lambos look quite plain compared to a Bugatti or a Paggini.

You compare it to a Gumpert or koenigsegg or maybe even a Spyker, Fairbaud, Nobel or Fisker, it looks a whole lot more 'designed'

The lines are IMHO nicely balanced, better even than the Peter Stevens designed F1 (the "expletive" end of the F1 was a tad too high IMO)

Of course I haven't had the 'user experience' (yet :pray) ) unlike the journos, but I've heard Lambo being increasingly criticized for producing a sterile ride, and that's also been said of the odd Ferrari or too, where a journo has been brave enough to risk his career.

I was luck enough about ten years ago to drive a Diablo and a 360. The Diablo, was terrifying to drive, huge, no visibility and a throttle pedal that only Geoff Capes could control. The 360 at normal motoring speeds drove like a Ford Mondeo.

The F1 was critically claimed for its out and out prowess AND its ability in normal traffic (theres that 'AND' car thing again), so I can't see why having a smooth ride, tractable engine AND BETTER PERFORMANCE than the so called 'more exciting' machinery should be a problem.

I've waited twenty years for this car, and I swear I'm going to have one if it kills me

They've fixed the noise which the jurno all commented on, the problem with McLaren is their obsessive quest for perfection... nothing wrong with that but few things in life are perfect and sometimes it is the inprfections that give character...

Still I would like to be a position to be spending that kind of money on a motor and I'd probably go for the McLaren...

They had a model of an MP4 23 in a case you would be keen on I think. Was priced at about £3,500 IIRC

Sounds like it was a 1/8th scale Amalgam model... £500 cheaper if you go direct to the maker of the model...

That looks like the puppy. they also had one of the mock steering wheels too.

I agree with your comment re perfectionism. But for me that's the very thing that floats my boat about McLaren.

paradoxically I also agree with the 'wabi sabi' comment giving character
